Voith Paper: RanFor Increases Operational Reliability at Palm Paper Mill in Eltmann

Palm Paper Mill recently upgraded their original suction forming roll, from PM 3 in Eltmann (Ger-many), with RanFor.decided on this step to drastically increase operational reliability. Unplanned downtimes due to problems with a shrunk-on wire are now history, while the high paper quality achieved so far is maintained? relates Andreas Reichert, Mill Manager at Eltmann.
Typically, suction forming rolls are equipped with a shrunk-on wire (sleeve). Shrunk-on sleeve material is either synthetic or metal and both types are susceptible to heavy wear. Detecting this wear is very difficult and time-consuming as this is only possible during a machine shut. Sleeve failures cause unplanned shuts and as a result high costs are incurred. A further disadvantage is that shrunk-on sleeves very often become contaminated with dirt, resulting in light spots on the web.

RanFor is the abbreviation of "random formation" and describes a completely new surface structure developed specifically for the forming roll. The regularity of the drilled and countersunk surface structure of a typical suction forming roll is dis-rupted by an additional random?secondary pattern. Thus, a surface pattern without obvious regularity is created, which completely eliminates undesirable web marking. The new surface is absolutely insensitive to disturbances and can be conditioned very easily and effectively by an outside shower. All existing suction forming rolls for graphic paper machines are possible to be upgraded with RanFor.
